a wonderful piece by the multi-talented momus. using the play button as both symbol and pattern, momus pondered on the play button’s role of transitioning from present-to-future and all its disparate implementations.

I’ve been thinking about the play button. More specifically, the distinction between status display indicators and play buttons; the way they correspond with different tenses of verb (present and future), different states of action (actual and conditional), different forms of speech (telling and asking), and the way that lots of software today mixes status indicators and play buttons.

Tag ties & affective spies is a critical approach on the social media of our times. What happens when we are “tagging” , “posting” and “sharing” our experiences and opinions  in platforms such as those of Facebook, YouTube, flickr or del.icio.us? Are we  really connecting and interacting or are we also forming the content and the structure of the social web itself? The online works included, highlight the controversies of the web 2.0, commenting on the constant balancing between order and chaos, democracy and adhocracy, exposure and exploitation that it presents.

kevin kelly is fascinated with tracking his mood. inspired by atish mehta’s facebook app happy factor, the former chief editor of wired magazine traces the lineage of various framework and investigates the methods and applications of emotional architecture mapping. long on research and a tad short on new ideas, this is nonetheless an educational read for those who are interested in exploring emotions as a key factor in design. via the quantified self.

Like emotions in the scheme Barrett describes, such phrases are simulations, bringing to mind previous experiences, triggering a cascade of associations. They were a form of knowledge, a social prediction machine; they allowed me to meet the demands of the situation, assess possibilities, invite cooperation.
